The City of Ames will continue to negotiate with a Texas-based developer that wants to build ISU student oriented housing on the former middle school site. The more-than 3 hour long public hearing was punctuated by pleas from people who live in the area who want the council to dramatically scale back the size of the development. While the council approved Breckenridge Land Acquisition's low density housing request for the so-called "north parcel" of land, it sent back for further negotiations specifics on the "south parcel." 1st Ward Council Member Gloria Betcher says they can't act on details of a plan the company changed just a day before Tuesday's meeting. The council also rejected a proposed settlement plan that had Breckenridge sell a large portion of property for single-family development, while retaining two sections for rental property. The council will take up the rezoning issue at it's Aug. 26th meeting.
